Fundraising for Dummies: Get the scoop here!
We decided to create a section of the website specifically for fundraising because it is only relevant to our volunteer experience in Ghana so there is no sense mixing it up in our everyday blog! This page will be dedicated to explaining what the donations we receive will be put towards, the different ways we are fundraising and of course, how far along we are to reaching our fundraising goal!
Where the funds are going:
Flights to and from Ghana: $ 3,760 Volunteer nursing program in Takoradi: $ 5,000 Work visa, immunizations and travel to and from the hospital in Ghana: $ 600 Total: $ 9,340 |
Total Amount Raised: $6329.00 Fundraising Goal: $9,340.00 |
THANK YOU!!!
We understand that some of our donations are anonymous and we want to extend our warmest thanks for anyone who has been able to help us on our journey! For the donations we were given in person we just wanted to compile a Thank You list. We are so grateful for the positive response and support we are being given for our trip and your generosity is immensely appreciated.
Sending a big shout out to:

Current Fundraising Projects:
Donation Box at Johnny's Store
Today we buckled down and spent an afternoon after school decorating a donation box together (It looks simple but it took close to 5 hours...if that is any indication of how crafty we are). We have started to spread the word that we will have somewhere to put donations at Johnny's store so we figured we better get on it and put a box there! We also added a pocket on the front with some business cards that have our website and email address on there so, if that is what lead you to this page, welcome and thank you so much for your interest! Our hopes are to publish a few articles in the local newspapers and newsletters around the community to spread the word and Johnny's store seems like a pretty central location to drop off donations!
Perogie Fundraiser
It looks like we have finally got a date for our 3rd annual perogie bee at Namao Hall! For those of you who have attended before you can probably vouch that embracing your inner Ukrainian is never a bad thing so we have just decided to make this a tradition! The only change this year is that we are making it a little bit of a fundraiser for the trip and charging $10 as an entry fee. For those of you who haven't attended before here is the scoop: you bring a cutting board, mixing bowl, cookie sheets, a rolling pin and your favourite perogie filling (you can find recipes online or contact us). When you get to Namao Hall we will have all the supplies you need to mix up fresh dough and we spend the afternoon visiting and making lots of your favourite homemade perogies! The only downfall to this event is that store bought perogies become inadequate very quickly! Here are the details:
When: Saturday March 15, 2014
Where: Namao Hall
Time: 1pm-5pm
RSVP so we know how much dough to supply!!
We welcome any family or friends you think would be interested in making some perogies... from experience the afternoon flies by when you make perogies with a group of people! :)
Update:
Perogie day was a great success! Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who was able to make it out and thank you even more for the generous donations! We are glad to announce that there are several more honorary Ukrainians running around the community!

Making Headlines
Lindsay and I have been brainstorming ways to reach out to our surrounding communities with regards to our trip. We made a few trips to the bank to set up an online donation button on our fundraising page so that making donations could be a little bit easier! Our next step was to spread the word! We have been lucky enough to land interviews with a few local newspapers in the last couple weeks! We have made our debut in the St. Albert Gazette this Wednesday and the number of readers on our website skyrocketed from around 20-30 per day all the way up to 200! That was pretty exciting for us! We are hoping that by spreading the word about our trip we will find some people who would like to donate!
Bottle Drive!
We need to start by giving a HUGE thanks to my Aunty Shelly, Connie, Willie, Jonah, Brittney, Keith, Jessie, Daniel, Jessica, Ian and last but not least Alyssa! This Sunday these troopers spent 6 hours driving around St. Albert and helping us collect bottles for the largest bottle drive I have ever been a part of. With 5 trucks doing runs through St. Albert and bringing loads back to the Riel Bottle Depot we managed to raise $1300 in about 5 hours! This entire event was coordinated by my Aunty Shelly who came up with the idea just days before and managed to get it organized in time for Sunday, including a BBQ lunch! Without her help and the help of everyone who made it out to collect bottles this wouldn't have been even a possibility! We spent lots of time enjoying the beautiful warm day and going door to door collecting bottles from houses, so a big thanks to everyone who donated bottles as well!

"Can" We Do It?
After spending several hours on the phone with different pubs in Edmonton my dad arranged for about 15 different places to save their bottles for an entire week for us! So we are back on bottle duty for the week and making a few pit stops every day! Today we stopped at 4 different places and took in another $260, the countdown is on as we finish up our last bit of fundraising with the help of a few dedicated bottle collectors!
Thank You
We want to express our absolute warmest thank you to everyone who has been involved in getting us to Africa. We have been absolutely overwhelmed with the generosity of our family, friends and community as we have prepared for this journey and we can't find the words to thank you enough!!! We are preparing with nervous anticipation for our final departure! Please feel free to stay tuned in as we travel, we are hoping to update our blog fairly frequently. Thank you again for all of your support and generosity we could not have done it without you!!!
